Dr Katharina Fabricius
Ocean Sentinel
Dr. Katharina Fabricius is a renowned coral ecologist originally from Germany. At the age of 24, she met a scientist from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and was inspired to pursue her passion for studying coral ecology and evolution on the Great Barrier Reef. With a focus on ocean acidification, water quality, climate change, and their impacts on reef health, she has become one of the region's most respected coral ecologists. Dr. Fabricius is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at AIMS, and presently leads a large team of scientists across 5 organisations to investigate the processes that facilitate coral reef recovery for the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP).
Artist Jason deCaires Taylor drew inspiration from fan corals and barrel sponges for Dr. Fabricius' Ocean Sentinels sculpture, as their forms provide shapes and spaces for various organisms to colonise.
