Dr David Vaughan

Ocean Sentinel

Dr. David Vaughan is famous for his role as Director of the Aquaculture Division at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Florida. He is known for his contributions to designing and operating the Aquaculture Development Park, a 60-acre facility focused on increasing aquaculture production while preserving marine ecosystem health and for accidentally discovering the coral fragmentation method that lets corals grow 40x faster. Dr. Vaughan is also recognised as the visionary behind the Plant a Million Corals initiative, aimed at revitalising coral populations globally by planting a million corals.

In the Ocean Sentinels artwork of Dr. Vaughan, artist Jason deCaires Taylor highlights elkhorn coral and lettuce coral, species commonly found in the Caribbean where he has conducted extensive work, although they are not native to Australia.
